Get 5 Thousand Friends And Make Millions Today … Really?

Every morning I have a routine. I run through my email, head over to my Google Reader to see what’s new, and spend some time on my social sites. And every day I see headlines like this:

  • Get 5 Thousand Friends On Facebook Today
  • Make A Million Dollars In 24 Hours By Doing This
  • Go From $0 to $1 Million In 30 Days

I don’t know about you, but I hit the delete button without thinking twice.

I know in today’s economy its easy to get sucked in by those headlines. Especially if you’re familiar with a person, have been following them for a while, and they are promising something that almost seems too good to be true.

But is all of that really possible? After being in business for myself for 20 years now, I have to say the answer is no.

Yes, there will always be the “case studies” of someone who hit everything just right and achieved amazing results. But that’s the exception to the rule. That’s not the norm. And it never will be.

If someone is going to show you how to get 5 thousand friends on Facebook today, don’t jump at the claim, step back and ask some questions first.

  • Why would I want 5 thousand people on Facebook today?
  • Are these 5 thousand people in my target market?
  • Would gaining 5 thousand friends in 24 hours make Facebook take notice, and potentially turn my account off?

Once you start asking the questions, you can easily see if this offer is a great offer, or simply too good to be true.

Asking questions is the sign of a great entrepreneur.

When you have a job, you learn the “yes” mentality. If your boss says to do something, you do it.

But in your own business, everything you do has an affect.

If you spend time on one project, you can’t accomplish something else.

If you spend your money in one way, it’s not available for something else.

When you start asking questions, you can quickly see what’s important to you, your business and your life. And then make choices based on what will help you out overall.

Back to the 5 thousand friends.

If I know I’m in the process of building a successful business, and I know I want to use Facebook to be one of my marketing methods, I need a goal to shoot for.

When we first started out, we started with little goals.

I want 50 fans to my Page this month.

I want to double my 50 fans to 100 fans in 30 days.

I want to move to 500 fans in the next six weeks.

I want 1,000 fans by June 1st.

And so on.

The steps and goals we made were in a natural progression. Think of it as taking baby steps. A baby must sit before she can crawl. Crawl before she can walk. And walk before she can run.

It all happens in a relatively short period of time. But you can’t accomplish one thing without doing the other first.

The same with outrageous goals. You can’t go from 0 to 5,000 fans overnight. You have to have a great looking page to attract your first 25 fans. You have to start advertising your Facebook Page in order to move to 100 fans. And you have to have a plan in order to move to 1,000 fans.

Once things are in place, the ball starts rolling naturally. And your goals can be achieved quickly.

  1. What I love are the emails I get weekend that tell me that I owe it to myself to get in touch with the multinational, super successful, SEO company (who has a gmail account) that’ll help me gain followers, reach the top of Google, make millions.

At least they stopped by my site. Hopefully they read a few blog posts while there.
